Let's talk "a good person but a bad friend"
Sips tea and picks up a pen ☕✍️
There's been a lot of debates about if one can be a good person but a bad friend and after much consideration, I believe it's possible for someone to embody both qualities. Here's why:
A person's character traits, such as kindness and empathy, don't necessarily determine their ability to maintain healthy friendships. Someone might be kind and generous in other areas of life, like work or community, but struggle with friendship dynamics, particularly communication. In my opinion, communication is key to a healthy friendship. While someone might be kind and possess other admirable qualities, they may lack the communication skills necessary for a strong friendship.
Unresolved issues, such as insecurity or past trauma, can also impact someone's ability to be a good friend. For instance, a person might have had a previous friendship that ended badly, leaving them with emotional scars. To everyone else, this person might seem amazing, but when it comes to friendships, they become withdrawn, possibly due to fear of another traumatic experience. As a result, they might not invest fully in the friendship.
This person might exhibit behaviors like a lack of support, consistently prioritizing their own needs over yours, ignoring or disrespecting your limits, and focusing on their own interests without considering your feelings. While these traits don't necessarily make them a bad person overall, they certainly don't make them a good friend.
Being a good person doesn't automatically translate to being a good friend, as it requires different skills and traits. Good intentions don't always lead to positive outcomes in friendships. Ultimately, it's possible for someone to excel in one area while struggling in the other.
As I take my last sip of tea, I'd like to emphasize that good intentions don't always translate to positive outcomes in friendships. With that, I'll close this discussion.
